Summer Shopping Linky Party! (July edition)

July 31, 2012 25 Comments
Hello everyone! Well, I had a mild panic attack this morning when I turned on my MacBook and saw the date. It’s the last day of July!! And I’m not panicking (yet) because the start of school is coming later in August, but because I completely spaced the July edition of the Summer Shopping Linky!
Well. It’s still July now and there’s still time to start this party, right?
So first I’ll show off a few purchases I found at Walmart today (please don’t tell Target I was unfaithful, it’s very unlike me!).
I bought these little zebra lamps…
They are so tiny and cute! They have the exact same base as my other three larger lamps that look like this:
I love how they will go together! And they will have a very important function. They’ll be going on the shelves of my classroom library, which is going to need some extra lighting because it’s going in a closet this year. (The closet is open, without doors, just so you don’t think I’m totally weird!)
I also bought some new little carpets for my little reading nooks. My old carpets were pretty aged and gross, so I grabbed a couple that matched our color scheme (still looking for a green, yellow, or orange one to complete the set)…
Yes…they are bathroom rugs.
A bit strange maybe, but I like them because they are super-soft, you can wash them in the machine, they are cheap (14.97 I think?), and they have those really grippy bottoms (my old ones kind of traveled a lot, you know?).
On a side note! I would never admit this to anyone else but my fellow classroom-crazed-designers…but I tucked a little sample of my color scheme in my bag today, just to make sure it all matched!

Well, that’s all I have for now! We don’t start back until August 28th, so I’m trying to hold out for some good school supply sales.

Have you been shopping? Of course you have!! And I’m hoping we can share our finds together! Please feel free to link up any classroom purchases.
I don’t have a button for the linky because I am in the middle of 463 projects right now and I’m sure you are too. I hope you don’t mind!! Here’s a blog button in case you want an easy way to link back from your post (it will link to this party)…

Looks good! We have tax free weekend this upcoming weekend so I am going to stock up on some school supplies and maybe some clothes too. Unfortunately, a lot of stuff I need (like laminating sheets) don't count) but at least I can save some money. I'll be linking up soon!

I think I have finally settled on my classroom theme. Black and White Polka dots with some yellow here and there.

I was SO excited to see the bath rugs! That makes SO MUCH SENSE! the "throw them in the wash" factor is huge. I will put them on my shopping list for sure. Thanks for sharing!

The picture of you little sample poking out of your bag cracked me up 🙂 I so did that this summer, too. Everything is coming together beautifully in your room. Aren't you glad that you went in to tackle it already?

I do the same thing! I have a little piece of border I keep in my purse, so if I come across something, I know if it matches. Glad I'm not the only one.

LOL…I was at Joanne's fabric today looking for fabric for my milk crate bench, I had to run back to my car for the sample I brought. Next time I am bringing a smaller sample that will fit in my purse :). I couldn't resist the 4 packs of crayons for $1 at Toys R Us and did some early shopping we don't go back till the 27 th.

Love your purchases! Thanks for hosting such a fun linky party.

  • Ms.M August 1, 2012 at 5:27 am

I'm a little scared to take pictures of how much stuff I have purchased. It has taken over a whole section of a room in my house. Ouch. Though I love seeing what everyone else has gotten.

BTW, those little lamps are precious! Love them.

Oh and a GREAT idea on the bath mats.

    I agree…the zebra lamps are awesome! :0)

I got those same bathroom rugs for my room, as well! And, for the exact same reasons: easy "toss-and-wash" and (hopefully) less traveling around the room. They don't tend to curl on the ends as much, either. Your room is adorable, too! I've been stalking…I mean, ahem…following your blog for a long time as an inspiration for when I finally got my own room! Thanks for all the amazing tips, tricks, and inspiration!!!

Finally had a chance to link up, Kristen 🙂 Hope you had a nice weekend.

I love the idea of using little carpets in your reading section — I will definitely have to check those out, especially since they go with the colors of my room! Thank you for these great finds and the linky party!

    • Anyone else using iReady this year?
I’m looking to add a little more accountability/motivation for my students, so this week we are going to start tracking our usage. My fourth graders will store their sheets in their binders so their data is kept private, then I’ll send it home in our weekly folders so parents can see progress as well.
What do you do for iReady accountability? I would love to hear more ideas!

    • This closet!!! It has NEVER been organized in all my years in this classroom!
Honestly, I would pile things in there and slam the door fast, in hopes the pile wouldn’t collapse 😂
So I FINALLY got some shelving and sorted everything into bins...and I am in heaven.
Now if only all bins were the same color blue...

    • Need a last-minute valentines gift for your class?
Or is it just me who is frantically doing this now? 😂
These are some editable coupons I shared years ago on my blog that are perfect for those no-cost presents. I’ve been saving our scholastic points, so everyone is getting a coupon to choose a book for our classroom library tomorrow. 📖❤️
Please click the link in my profile if you would like a copy! I hope some of you can use them!! (

    • Binders, folders, or notebooks?
Over the years I’ve become a binders kind of girl...I tried to go with notebooks again this fall and it wasn’t the same. There’s just something about having everything all in one place.
So in January, I switched back to binders and I’m so glad I did. I use prenumbered tabs which saves A TON of time in setting them up (see the last pic). I try to number the handouts in the bottom corner to match the tab number it belongs in (when I remember to 😉) but really it’s a great exercise in following directions as papers are handed out if I don’t remember to number them.
My fourth graders LOVE their students from last year mention them when they come back to visit (it was actually thanks to them I got binders again, since they enjoyed them so much). Next fall, it’ll be binders from the start for us!
Do you like binders, folders, or notebooks? Or a combination?

    • I received a few questions on how to get the day count on @planbookcom, so I wanted to share it here (it’s super quick!).
If you go into the Display settings, you will find a drop down menu under “Date Styling”.
Click the check box next to “show school day counter” and you should be all set!
I have a couple of blog posts about planbook and I’m working in some updated ones to share soon...anything in particular you’d like to see more about?

    • Did you know you can add little check boxes to Google Sheets? ✅
I’m REALLY trying to get more ahead in my lesson planning so I can have my weekends free...and this little check box tool is helping with just that!
I set up a Sheets doc with each subject area I need to plan for. In the second column, I added the check boxes (you can find them under Insert).
It’s a really nice feature for those little checklists you want to reuse each week! Now back to lesson planning 😬
