How to Make a Checklist in Google Sheets (Plus Designing Shortcuts!)
share this timesaver:
There are some great options for creating digital checklists in Google Drive from Google Docs to Google Keep…but Google Sheets gives you the most design control over your checklist. So I wanted to share a quick tutorial on how to make a checklist in Google Sheets…and how to make that checklist colorful!
Before we begin, I have to say that although I love checklists as much as the next teacher, I do think they can become a bit overwhelming at times. For this reason I developed aย checklist strategyย to help balance tasks and get it all done. You can read more about this quick tips:ย 4 Easy Ways to Create a Checklist Strategy.
Ok, let’s get started!
How to Make a Checklist in Google Sheets
Open a new Google Sheet.
Go to Insert then choose Checkbox:
Click on the textbox to style it:
Change the textbox color and size:
Click the checkbox to see how it looks:
Duplicate Checkboxes with a shortcut
Once you have your checkbox styled as you would like, click on the cell and drag where the blue dot is (at the bottom, right hand corner of the cell).
Click and drag down to add as many checkboxes as you would like:
This will instantly create checkboxes, styled just as you like!
Add Colorful checkboxes
If you’d like to color-code your checkboxes, follow the same steps as above. This will duplicate the checkbox in the exact size you’d like.
Then, click each checkbox and choose a color. You can also add custom colors to your checkboxes to really make them to your taste!
add text to your checklist
Now that your checkboxes are styled, you can add your text right next to each one.
A nice feature of Google Sheets is you can just retype right over text when you want to change anything…so your list can be reused easily.
Style the gridlines to make your checklist stand out
You may want to change some of the gridlines around your checklist. This will make it pop!
One way to adjust the gridlines is to set the border to white. To do this, select the column of text in your checklist:
Now go to the Borders menu, set the border color to white, and click on Left Border:
This will hide the border and make your checklist stand out more easily:
You can also hide ALL gridlines to really make that checklist pop! Go to View, then click Show, and uncheck Gridlines:
Now all gridlines are hidden!
I hope these quick tips on how to make a checklist in Google Sheets have been helpful!
