Storage Drawers for Student Tables

February 10, 2013 19 Comments
Hey everyone!! How have my New England friends weathered the storm? We saw quite a bit of snow in my town…

But, in the end, everything cleared up and looked really pretty…

Back to storage!
Remember these drawers I talked about this past summer?
Well, they’ve been a godsend this year! They turned out to be the perfect size for binders, books, writing materials…all of the essential supplies we need to store creatively, since we don’t have desks in our class.
There was only one little issue with these lovely drawers…constant traffic jams! Even when I separated the stacks of drawers, I still had nine students traveling to one place.
So (and if you know me well, this won’t come as a surprise at all) I bought some more!
For two reasons really.
The drawers are PERFECT and I wanted to store even more with them. So we now have a drawer for books and writing materials (just as before) and also a new drawer…one to store papers going home and student binders:
I could not be happier with this setup! Each student has two drawers and can keep track of which materials to store where with the labels, as shown below:
(does that picture make you feel dizzy? I debated on whether or not to include it. I was trying to be all photographerish, sorry!)

The other great thing about the additional drawers is that I can now have them separated into four different parts of the room…

…which organizes the traffic flow so much more efficiently.

I LOVE them! They are neat, organized, and take up very little space.
I’ve made some other refinements to our room (which is really just a fancy way of saying I’ve bought some more things) and I promise to share these very soon. I think I do this every year…it’s almost like a second wave of classroom setup–setup, take two!
So. Did you get a lot of snow? Or is it really hot and sunny where you are? (don’t tell me if so, joking!) Do you evolve your organizational system as the year progresses? (also a fancy way of saying you shop as much as I do) Thanks for stopping by!

I can never look at those labels enough. I simply love them. And what a great idea to have the drawers spaced out around the room. Perfect solution to the traffic flow problem. Awesome!

      Thanks dear Steph!

I want to sit at those tables with my stuff all organized like that!!!

Me too, 'cause my table sure isn't as neat as theirs hahahaha!

  • Courtney February 10, 2013 at 7:57 pm

Can you come organize my room for me? You have such great ideas and I'm really terrible at organization. Quick question — Is that one set of drawers in the photo or several stacked together?
That snow looks so pretty. We didn't get any in Tennessee. It's warm right now bu it's supposed to rain for the next 4 days. Inside playtime — Ugh!

Hey Courtney, thanks!! The drawers are in sets of three, so I stacked them that way, it's the perfect height for my room. But you could stack them in different formations.

  • Laurie February 10, 2013 at 8:07 pm

Simply amazing!! I bought the smaller ones and store all of our writing supplies for the class.

Oh, we had snow and howling wind!! Portland, Maine had 31.9 inches and just a couple of hours away where I live we had 19.4.

It's in the 30's today and will be for the week so I'm sure the snow won't last long. If it does, I'll be thinking about a vacation to some where warm!!

    • Kristen February 10, 2013 at 10:23 pm

That storm was crazy, huh? I'm glad it's warmer for you today! The sun is shining here…we're supposed to get some kind of icy mix tomorrow though :/

You are so organized!! We got about a foot of snow here in NJ!

hey Teri, thanks! I'm only showing you the organized parts of my room though…my table is another story, ha!

  • Kelley Cirrito February 10, 2013 at 10:33 pm

I totally wish we had snow…I love the snow but we have only had a few inches here this year! I love how organized you are! I am considering using this idea if I ever have to go back to tables. I was one of two teachers who were lucky enough to get desks this year! You never know what next year will bring. I totally know what you mean about a second wave of buying classroom stuff! I am thinking about my theme for next year already and I am completely changing it for the first time in 3 years! I decided it was time for a change! 🙂

I feel like I was never done with my classroom setup- I'm still not entirely happy with it! I am putting those on my wishlist for my classroom next year because I can totally see how they would make my life easier.

A classroom is never completely finished, is it? This was such a smart idea and I know it is going to help with the traffic jams. Thanks for sharing the beautiful snow pictures! We hardly ever see snow around here and it makes me a teensy jealous:)

  • Jennifer Smith-Sloane February 11, 2013 at 3:16 pm

Oh my goodness, the organization in this post makes my OCD heart swoon! You have totally nailed it! Want to come organize my home office?

I always love the updates and pictures of your room. 🙂 As always your brilliant. 🙂 I am thinking about this for next year. Just not sure if I really have a need for it. Jsut love how it looks in your room. LOL

  • The Wild Rumpus February 11, 2013 at 5:56 pm

Kristen–I have these labels and drawers (not the exact ones) going in my room thanks to you, and I love them! the ones I bought have 3 drawers each, so I spaced them out right away, and that has helped a lot. We do have desks, but more things to put in them than can possibly fit. Thank you 100x over for sharing these labels–I love them, and I love that I don't have to change them next year because they are numbered.

Like you, I go through a major urge to redecorate at this time of year. I think it's because the shiny, pristine glow of everything from August has disappeared, and the type A in me needs to gain control and fix it up, of course making it pretty in the process!

We're on snow day #2 here in CT. So pretty 🙂 Stay warm.

Your snow pictures are soooooo pretty! And I think I'm freezing here in CA with a high of 60. Seriously. Today was windy and cold and I had to wear my Uggs. (I was off school. But I would still wear them.)
Love your storage ideas! We have desks so I don't need it for that . . . but my "turn in" tray gets a constant traffic jam. I'm wondering if I could adapt your idea as a turn in tray for each table group somehow . . . my wheels are turning.
I hope to see some stools in the next two weeks or so!!!! 🙂

  • 4321Teach February 13, 2013 at 4:55 am

It is the time of year where snow should become nonexistent, at least that's what I think. Lol I am from Missouri and it has been in the 30's but we haven't had much snow. I am SOOO ready for spring. Tomorrow is suppose to be in the 50's, so I am happy. 🙂
I love how organized you are and your labels are super cute. I also love that you have them in separate sections fo the room. That is so something I would do.
    Thanks for sharing. 🙂

My organizational system is constantly evolving as well!!! And I am in love with those drawers too! I bought some a few weeks ago to go inside my cabinets and oh my goodness, they are amazing!!!! I want to go out and buy more but I don't know if I have the space!!! haha Love your fabulous organizational system, as always!! I so wish I could have tables instead of desks. Maybe next year I'll be able to talk my principal into it. 🙂

    • Anyone else using iReady this year?
I’m looking to add a little more accountability/motivation for my students, so this week we are going to start tracking our usage. My fourth graders will store their sheets in their binders so their data is kept private, then I’ll send it home in our weekly folders so parents can see progress as well.
What do you do for iReady accountability? I would love to hear more ideas!
Please click the link in my profile if you’d like a copy of this sheet for your class (

    • This closet!!! It has NEVER been organized in all my years in this classroom!
Honestly, I would pile things in there and slam the door fast, in hopes the pile wouldn’t collapse 😂
So I FINALLY got some shelving and sorted everything into bins...and I am in heaven.
Now if only all bins were the same color blue...

    • Need a last-minute valentines gift for your class?
Or is it just me who is frantically doing this now? 😂
These are some editable coupons I shared years ago on my blog that are perfect for those no-cost presents. I’ve been saving our scholastic points, so everyone is getting a coupon to choose a book for our classroom library tomorrow. 📖❤️
Please click the link in my profile if you would like a copy! I hope some of you can use them!! (

    • Binders, folders, or notebooks?
Over the years I’ve become a binders kind of girl...I tried to go with notebooks again this fall and it wasn’t the same. There’s just something about having everything all in one place.
So in January, I switched back to binders and I’m so glad I did. I use prenumbered tabs which saves A TON of time in setting them up (see the last pic). I try to number the handouts in the bottom corner to match the tab number it belongs in (when I remember to 😉) but really it’s a great exercise in following directions as papers are handed out if I don’t remember to number them.
My fourth graders LOVE their students from last year mention them when they come back to visit (it was actually thanks to them I got binders again, since they enjoyed them so much). Next fall, it’ll be binders from the start for us!
Do you like binders, folders, or notebooks? Or a combination?

    • I received a few questions on how to get the day count on @planbookcom, so I wanted to share it here (it’s super quick!).
If you go into the Display settings, you will find a drop down menu under “Date Styling”.
Click the check box next to “show school day counter” and you should be all set!
I have a couple of blog posts about planbook and I’m working in some updated ones to share soon...anything in particular you’d like to see more about?

    • Did you know you can add little check boxes to Google Sheets? ✅
I’m REALLY trying to get more ahead in my lesson planning so I can have my weekends free...and this little check box tool is helping with just that!
I set up a Sheets doc with each subject area I need to plan for. In the second column, I added the check boxes (you can find them under Insert).
It’s a really nice feature for those little checklists you want to reuse each week! Now back to lesson planning 😬
