DIY: Highlighter tool for read alouds

February 25, 2011
This project was inspired by the lovely Hadar at Outfitted and Inspired…she posted about Highlighter Sticks awhile back and they are just too cool. My students are older and don’t really need personal highlighters to track. But we do need them for something else!
I mentioned before how I like to project our read alouds on our document camera (see earlier post about that here!). This is a wonderful way for all students to see the book. An added bonus for my older students is that they track along with the story.

The only problem? Tracking along with chapter books on the projector can get a bit tricky. My students always ask, “where are you??” and I pause to point it out…but this only keeps them on track for so long (understandably).

So, thanks to Hadar’s post, I ended up buying some see-through pocket folders (only had to cut one, the rest can be used) and some cute stickers from Michaels ($1.29) and made these highlighter strips for our read alouds. The stickers act as a little handle.
Plus, they’re wicked cute (I can rationalize any purchase for my classroom, I swear).
The two short guys are for chapter books. I just kind of estimated the width and cut it with my fabulous paper cutter.

And the longer size is for our picture books.

I think this will really help my students follow along with our future read alouds on the projector!

And the added bonus…

They also work as bookmarks when we’re finished reading for the day!

Thanks Hadar for the inspiration! This is one of those little things that will make a big difference for my kids! 🙂
