Oooo, I was just wondering the other day how to do this. I had to count my comments 3 times to make sure I had gotten the right winner of the giveaway. Your a life saver. Thanks.

    Kristen,

I have the pop up window for my comments but I tried it anyway and it worked. It shows up when I click on the individual posts and shows the comments at the bottom. Does that make sense?

I just changed the number color from black to white and the background color from white to black to match my blog background. 🙂 Thanks

Thank you times 1,000!!! I do a giveaway on my blog every week, with 100-200 comments and it is SUCH a pain to have to count to the comment that is selected!

You just made my life so much easier…I could kiss you right now! 🙂

  • Mrs. Lochridge April 28, 2011 at 2:18 am

Thank you once again! I first tried to add the numbers…but, it didn't work when I had my comments set to the pop-up style. I had to change my comments setting to "embedded below" and then the numbering worked. Just in time for my Summer Spectacular Giveaway!! 🙂

I am a little late on commenting. Thanks for taking the time to share this feature.

After you two week break, I would love to pick your brain about the alignment of a comment.

In a post you have an option to format to the left, right, center, or an even alginment. I would like all my long comments to be even.

I was so happy to find this, but after trying for over an hour it just doesn't work- I guess I should ask the question—Does it go back and number old comments or all the ones made after I add the gadget?

Hi Tiffani, if it isn't working, try moving the html box with the code onto a different part of the page. So (when you are under the Design tab) if you had placed that html in your sidebar, try moving to the bottom of the page, under your blog posts part for example.

  • Mrs. Mugurussa July 4, 2011 at 1:49 am

Thanks Kristen for the EASY tutorial on numbering my comments. I had to change the background of my numbers from white to none. I didn't know if it would work because none isn't really a color but it did! I wouldn't have been able to get a handle on this blogging thing without you.:)

  • Kristen August 12, 2011 at 12:02 am

Hi Mrs. Mugurussa, that is really strange! Did the gadget get moved by accident? Sometimes it seems a bit picky about placement, like we talked about before. I hope it works again!

  • Mrs. Mugurussa August 12, 2011 at 3:19 pm

I've deleted and put it in several spots, nothing seems to work. It is strange, that it worked and then didn't. The wierd thing is I hadn't moved anything on my page only added things to the side bar and it was at the bottom like we talked. Oh well, guess I'll just count those comments UGH
I've looked at other web tutorials on how to do this, but yours was by far the easiest- I couldn't even follow some of them. Thanks anyway

I am so frustrated! I have been trying to number my comments for over 2 hours with no luck. I consider myself very tech savvy. I have tried all different methods. I have changed code. I have moved this html gadget all over the page. I've change margins, colors, etc. I have had no luck. Can you offer any advice?

    Thanks!

    http://teachingmycalling.blogspot.com

    • Kristen January 15, 2012 at 2:14 pm

I'm really not sure, Cara, I'm sorry! Usually it works after it's been moved to a different part of the page. The only thing I can think to do is to do a google search for the code and try it again (in case the code didn't show up correctly in the document I provided). I hope it works!

  • Ginger Snaps January 16, 2012 at 3:23 am

    Yeah, I haven't been successful either. =(

  • Marlana January 21, 2012 at 2:54 am

    Kristen,

I read somewhere that as of right now the numbered comments won't show up because of the new threaded comments. However, I left my code up anyway. I just had a giveaway and and tried copying and pasting the comments in a Word document to see if they were numbered and they were. Thank goodness! I really only use the numbering for giveaways anyway, so the code is still useful even if it can't be seen directly on my blog page.

    Blessings,

  • Fern Smith January 30, 2012 at 11:33 pm

    Hello All,
I had this on my blog and then forgot about it….I watched your video and used your Word doc…thank you bunches and bunches! But now that I am having a contest I wondered why it wasn't numbering….so I came back, watched the video and started over…no joy. I Googled it and found the same common thought that Marlana mentioned about threaded comments.
So then I copied and pasted my 8 comments so far into a Word document and it still works….yippeeee! Thank you Kristen & Marlana!

You are awesome for posting this. I've tried all I know possible to do…it doesn't show comments numbered. The very first post on my blog has 2 comments….other than that, comments are in archived posts. What should i do? Moved it to both sides, under post, bottom of blogs, removed gadget, started over, etc. 🙁

  • A M Smith January 31, 2012 at 12:37 am

Nevermind, I just read the few comments towards bottom of video tutorial!! Ha. I'll leave gadget on blog and hope it works in a word doc!! Thanks!!

  • Sarah Mackey February 23, 2012 at 11:21 pm

O.K. I just tried to do this exactly how you said and I can't get it figured out??? Any suggestions. I copied and pasted your word document and went into my design and added the html gadget, clicked save, but when I went into my latest post with comments, I didn't have any numbers. Thanks.

  • Theresa February 29, 2012 at 2:04 am

I couldn't get it to work with pop-up but embedding comments worked! Thanks again

  • Tessa April 5, 2012 at 1:42 am

I was able to get this to work with threaded comments with a pop up but not embedded. I wonder if our templates determine how this works for us.

    • Do you like to use a certain color scheme in your google docs?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I always tend to use the same shades in my visuals for class...so I set up a file of my go-to colors. It’s very easy to do...and will save you lots of time in future google drive designing!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Here are the steps, in case you’d like to capture your favorite hues for google!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀First, open up a new slides file. Insert a table, and choose your favorite colors for each cell (to create a set of color swatches).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Name your file (I used “color swatches”) so you can find it quickly in the future.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Select your table and copy it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Now, open up a new slides file or google doc. Click paste and your table will appear.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Delete your table. Even though the color swatches are gone, they are now stored in your custom colors selector. When you go to change your font color (or the cells and borders of a table) you will see all of your favorite colors under “custom” (swipe to see this in the last pic).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀And that’s it!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I hope some of you will be able to use this idea! It’s saved me lots of time in designing in my drive.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#googledrive #technologyintheclassroom #iteachfourth #iteach4th #iteach456 #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram
    • Ok, I learned something else new in google docs that I LOVE...even more than default margins!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀You can set a default font!!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀So I tend to go with Century Gothic for everything in class...usually paired with a bold font for headings (Oswald is my favorite!). But every time I start a new doc, I have to take the time to make these font changes.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Well, it turns out you can set a default font (and color) of your choice in two simple steps! It can only be one font...but at least it will save some time!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Here are the steps:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀First, open a new doc and type a word with the font/color combo you would like as your default font. Highlight the text you just typed.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Then, go to Format > Paragraph Styles > Normal Text > Update 'Normal text' to match.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Then go back to the Format menu and choose Paragraph Styles > Options > Save as my default styles. (Swipe to see pics of all these steps if you prefer a visual!).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀And that's it! Now when you open a new google doc, you will see your favorite font, all ready for you to start designing!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#googledrive #technologyintheclassroom #iteachfourth #iteach4th #iteach456 #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram
    • Did you know that you can set default margins in Google Docs? I never realized until the other day!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀It drives me CRAZY when I open up a new doc and there's all that extra space at the top! I'm constantly reconfiguring the margins when I make a new doc. But it turns out you can set your favorite margin settings (because everyone has favorite margin settings, right?) and set it as a default.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀And it’s very easy to do!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Go to File, then Page Setup. Enter the margins you would like, then click the "Set as Default" button.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀And that's it!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Your next docs will open with this new setting from now on! Such a time-saver!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀(Am I the only one who didn't know this?) 😂⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#googledrive #technologyintheclassroom #iteachfourth #iteach4th #iteach456 #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram
    • "This is so fun!" I got to hear some of my favorite words over and over during math today. And it was all thanks to  @adventuresofmssmith_ and @teachinginroom6!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀These clever ladies shared an awesome idea for solving some mundane math problems (multi-digit multiplication and long division review for us today) while building index card towers!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀And the setup was so easy.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I made 30 review problems and numbered the cards. Then I highlighted the cards with a quick swipe to color code them (thanks to @teachinginroom6 for the color-coding idea!). The simpler problems were pink and could earn one index card when solved correctly. The more complex problems were yellow and could earn two index cards...and the most difficult problems were green and worth three index cards.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀My students worked in small groups and showed me their cards as they solved them. Some showed a couple of cards at a time, others solved everything first before "cashing in" (as they called it 😂).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀They were completely engaged and working as teams for the whole math block...it was great! And they are already asking when we can do this again.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#math #iteachmath #multiplication #division #iteachfourth #iteach4th #iteach456 #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram
    • How many field trips does your class go on each year?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀We go on four (five some years 😬) and field trip season is just starting up now!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I like to keep a checklist of our different trips to keep track of forms, money, and chaperones. I color-code each trip with a different flair pen if the trips are back-to-back (we are visiting our state capital this week and heading to the ymca for water safety next week!).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀This checklist is from my Instant Checklists resource...it has a hundred lists, ready to go, just enter your students’ names once. Please click the link in my profile if you’d like to see more! (http://bit.ly/instantchecklists)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Are you going on a field trip soon?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#classroommanagement #classroomorganization #iteachfourth #iteach4th #iteach456 #tpt #teacherspayteachers #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram
    • I have lost my tv remote about 45,000 times this year. I think it’s due to my compulsive paper stacking tendencies.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀But I found a solution!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I got this awesome desktop organizer to hold my remote (and flair pens, phone, stickies, nurse notes...all of the important things!) I found it on Amazon...it’s a STORi desktop organizer and I ❤️ it!!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#tryingtostayorganized #classroomorganization #iteachfourth #iteach4th #iteach456 #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram
